Meet Verra: A Global Renowned Carbon Accounting Standard Organization
As climate change has become more serious, carbon credits are the rising star in many industries. However, not many people know about “Verra.” Let’s find out more!
What is Verra?
Verra is a world organization that plays a role in standardizing programs for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, primarily carbon. Verra is now known as the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) after previously being called the Voluntary Carbon Standard. Based in Washington D.C., Verra since 2007 has developed and conducted a process for recording greenhouse gas emission reductions to the highest standards. Verra acts as a carbon underwriter for various customers who need to buy carbon credits to offset their carbon emissions. Verra will certify carbon credits by verifying and managing the standards, projects, and transactions that take place so the company can use them to offset its carbon emission excess.
Not only Verra, but there are also some independent standard organizations that can certify carbon credits. Four major of them are:
- Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard
- The Gold Standard
- Climate Action Reserve
- American Carbon Registry
What makes Verra different?
Though each crediting organization has excellent incentives, Verra is one to watch. Let’s take a look further to see the “why.”
To date, Verra is the world’s largest registry and leader in the carbon market. Verra’s program includes more than 1,800 certified green projects that have removed more than 944 million tons of carbon from the atmosphere.
All programs are subject to extensive stakeholder consultation and expert review and rely on the four key components of Verra: standard, independent assessment, accounting methodologies, and registry. Verra promotes measurable climate change and sustainable development outcomes by reducing emissions, improving livelihoods, and driving large-scale investments in nature conservation activities.
Therefore, Verra standards and programs are:
- Trustworthy: Trusted by a wide range of stakeholders, including non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and the government, Verra is widely recognized in the voluntary and compliance market for providing a reliable and transparent assessment of project performance.
- Innovative: Verra provides innovative solutions to environmental and social issues by identifying opportunities for transparent and robust measurements and reports of field interventions to help address the world’s most pressing challenges on a large scale.
- Comprehensive: Verra works for people and the planet by supporting projects and activities that bring various benefits to the community and the environment.
So, are every project can be certified by Verra? Are there any projects in Indonesia that Verra previously approved? Or are there any other questions you are curious about related to carbon markets?
